WHY HAVEN’T I COMMENTED UPON THE IRAQI CONSTITUTIONAL REFERENDUM?

Because it meant jack-all. A few months back, after the Iraqi parliamentary "elections", while the republicans were wetting themselves in joy over the event, I maintained that the "election" had been a sham, and meant nothing.

I warned that no matter how many republicans waved around ink-stained fingers, the insurgency would continue to expand. I cautioned that it didn't matter that 30% of elligible voters ventured out to cast votes- Americans and Iraqis would continue to die- but in greater numbers, than ever before.

In the intervening months, I have been proven right. Just as that "election" meant nothing, this "election" is equally meaningless. Hundreds of americans have died, and thousands of Iraqis have died, since the previous "election"- and it will only get worse, in the days and months ahead.

But here's what gets me:

This "election" has produced downright stunning results: 98%- 97%- 99% of Iraqis supposedly voted in favor of a constitution that was written by their benevolent american occupiers.

Uhh- ex-squeeze me?

Are we to believe that 98% of the people who have suffered the worst imaginable depredations upon their society, at our hands, are going to vote, so overwhelmingly, for a constitution that we wrote?

This "election" was a farce- a fakery, and a farce.

Do I cheer this? Do I dance in the blood that the lies of the government that purports to speak in my name sheds so easilly and callously? No- I do not. I hate this grand opera of fakery and murder that continues to be dressed in flowers and false promises.

I have lost count of the times, in the past five years, that I have stayed awake at night, hoping, earnestly, and honestly, that I will be proven wrong, and that this cascade of death and lies will come to an end.

But it won't. It will not stop, until we force this gaggle of killers and psycopaths from power- and as always- it's up to you.
